Materials & Craft

Material quality depends on selection, detailing and repairability.

Materials are judged against climate, wear, workmanship, cleaning, local availability and the way they meet adjacent components.

01

Select for exposure

A finish used outdoors faces different conditions from one used in a bedroom or lobby. Moisture, sunlight, impact, cleaning chemicals and traffic should inform the specification before visual preference decides the final choice.

02

Approve real samples

Samples reveal texture, colour variation, workmanship and the relationship between materials better than a catalogue image. Representative mock-ups are useful where the same detail will be repeated across facades, bathrooms, kitchens or shared areas.

03

Design the edges

Corners, thresholds, joints, fixings and service penetrations are where good materials can look poor. These interfaces should be drawn and reviewed because site teams otherwise have to invent solutions under programme pressure.

04

Plan replacement

Some components will fail or wear before the building does. The team should know whether replacement stock, matching finishes, access and suitable local trades are likely to be available when that happens.
